Carrie and Tom were married on September 4, 2011 at The Twenty Mile House in Cromberg, California

Carrie and Tom first met while serving as Peace Corps volunteers in Guatemala. Tom runs a non-profit, while Carrie is a consultant working with small businesses. The dedicated green couple said their “I Do’s” in the breathtaking Plumas National Forest. Their sustainable Sylvan wedding bloomed with world travel elegance and eco-chic style.

Our friends at The Green Bride Guide are sharing a few ways this couple managed to use sustainable materials and family treasures in their wedding!

  1. Her Grandmother's Ring Re-fashioned:
Repurposing jewelry is a great way to green your wedding day. A family jeweler (also a member of the Green American Green Business Network) helped Carrie and Tom create their wedding rings. Carrie’s ring featured an exquisite diamond from her grandmother’s engagement ring.

  2. Fair Trade Decor gets a Second Life:
The wedding décor was nature inspired with a sustainably sylvan theme! Mason jars were bursting with handpicked, seasonal flowers from a friend’s garden. The Fair Trade table runners were made by Guatemalan weavers that Carrie had worked with. They were repurposed after the ceremony and turned into placemats

  3. Classy Kegs - Yes it's possible:
The dinner menu was prepared using only local and organic ingredients. To cut back on waste, the couple purchased kegs from a friend’s brewery and rented tableware from local companies. The dessert was a delicious combination of handpicked blackberries, mint, and Fair Trade chocolate.

  5. Eco-Friendly Wedding Gown:
Carrie’s homemade silk and hemp wedding dress was accessorized with a woven belt from the Peace Corps service and buttons from her great grandmother. The result was a stunning, reusable and completely original wedding gown!
