Real Green Wedding: 6 Tips to Plan a Green Wedding

TAGS: GREEN BRIDE GUIDE, REAL GREEN WEDDING, ECO-FRIENDLY

Abigail Cerra and Craig Buske were married on October 1st, 2011 at The Dining Studio in Minneapolis, MN.

Carrying on the great bowling tradition of her grandparents, Abigail joined the Bowling League for the University of Minnesota Law School. Craig had signed up too, and their teams played against each other at Memory Lanes Bowling Alley. The rest, as they say, is history!

Abigail and Craig wanted to have a green wedding, so they’re sharing 6 of their green wedding tips to help give other smart brides some ideas when it comes to reducing the impact of your wedding.

  1. Reuse Objects for Table Decor

For centerpieces, Abi and Craig used empty wine bottles instead of vases, which were reused as decor and then recycled!

  2. Avoid cheap throw-away decorations

There were no paper or throw-away decorations used. The couple only used local organic pumpkins, gourds, corn and flowers. Guests were allowed to take home the decorations and Abi is making a pie with one of the wedding pumpkins.

  3. Go Vintage or Borrow Some Bling

Abi's dress was vintage and she knows she’ll wear the dress again. Her aunt lent her the jewelry for the wedding and Craig also wore a suit that he already owned and will wear again.

  4. Choose functional (and eco-friendly) favors!

All the bridesmaid's received reusable grocery shopping bags, reusable snack bags from Bag It Conscious on Etsy, a fair trade bar of chocolate, and hair styling and cuts at a salon that uses eco-friendly hair products.

The groom's attendant's received shirts and ties that they wore at the wedding and will wear again.

  5. Encourage Guests to Go Green!

The newlyweds asked their guests to participate in the "green" theme, by creating a registry with many eco-friendly items. They asked for, and received, reusable cloth napkins, reusable cleaning towels, and memberships to conservation-focused entities such as the Minnesota Arboretum and Minnesota State Parks. They also requested gift certificates to restaurants that focus on organic and sustainable produce.

  6. Book a Green Getaway!

For their honeymoon, Abi and Craig took a small road trip in Minnesota where they dined almost exclusively at eco-friendly restaurants, such as Chez Jude and the Angry Trout and enjoyed active and green minded activities, such as visiting state parks, hiking, and camping.
