Michelle Obama, Bride of the Inaugural Ball

Michelle Obama unveiled (pun intended) her white chiffon one-shoulder gown by Jason Wu at the first of 10 inauguration parties they atteneded last night. Is it just us, or did it kind of look like a wedding dress? (Also check out Michelle's champagne-colored State Dinner gown by Indian American designer Naeem Khan)
Although white is the traditional colour worn by the first lady, some thought Michelle Obama might have put a colourful spin on her gown.
Fashion personality and stylist Robert Verdi commented " Nancy Reagan wore a one-shouldered Galanos, Laura Bush wore white and of course, Jackie Kennedy wore it. Wearing white is the historic route and I thought she'd do something different." Apparently Verdi wasn't thrilled with the style either. "I was expecting a different silhouette like a halter. It's an inauguration, not a prom."
Others, including Oprah magazine creative director Adam Glassman raved about her choice.
"I love that she's wearing white," he said. "It's about optimism and a new start and a fresh moment; she's the bride of the evening. I think she looks modern, youthful and fresh."

As for Michelle's day outfit designed by Isabel Toledo, the reviews were equally as mixed. While some raved about the "lemon grass" colour representing sunshine and a new day, others were unsure of how the fabrics presented on television. Colour aside, the innovative ensemble was designed for warmth. In addition to the lace coat, sweater and sheath dresses, a hidden layer of pashmina was added.
Glassman weighs in on her first outfit. "She looks pulled together and chic, but not scary fashionista. She wears it real, and you see her first; you're not looking at the outfit."
At SmartBride we think this is great advice when planning your own look for your wedding day.
- When choosing a dress, keep in mind how materials will photograph. Silk fabrics can reflect light and highlight problem areas, while beatuiful lace or embroidery detailing can be lost in some photos. Have your mom or a friend take photos of all sides of the dress before you make your final decision.
- Choose a dress and accessories that don't overpower you. Your guests and especially your groom want to see YOU first, then the dress. Think of your dress and jewelry as a picture frame accenting you, the work of art.
- Stay true to you. Don't stray too far from your usual hair and makeup. Aim for a beautiful and polished version of your everyday style. If you generally wear your hair down, stick with it.
- Plan for weather. No matter what time of year, your wedding day attire should include a few extra layers. Try a pashmina or wrap to cover your shoulders, or a cashmere button up sweater for fuller coverage. Compile a collection of neutral and similarly coloured umbrellas for use in photos and to keep everyone dry and warm. Winter brides should plan and budget for a full length coat that can accommodate the extra size and shape of their gown.
