Bride-To-Be: The Dress That Was Meant To Be

Nearly ten months after purchasing my wedding gown I went to the bridal boutique for my first fitting.

The seamstress insisted that I not come in too early (several months before the wedding) in case I gained or lost weight, but I was determined not to leave my fitting until a few weeks before our September wedding.

Humorous Dress Fitting - If the Dress Fits Wear it!

We'll have lots of last-minute wedding details to take care of, so I really wanted the peace of mind that comes with knowing my dress would be ready ahead of time.

A Nearly Postponed Fitting

I had scheduled my fitting assuming that my mom would be able to make the 1 ½ hour drive to be with me at the store. I knew my maid of honour would not be able to make it because she had to work.

When my mom unexpectedly fell ill and couldn’t make the drive, I thought I would have to go to my fitting alone (this didn’t sound fun at all)! I was discussing this issue with a friend I work with, who seemed even more excited about the fitting than I did, when she offered to come with me! Thanks to her offer, I was able to keep my appointment and had company while being fitted.

The Alterations That Weren’t

Since my dress has a corset-closure, I wasn’t expecting to need many alterations. The corset allows the bodice to fit a slightly larger or smaller size and helps the dress to fit each curve perfectly.

I had assumed that I would need a hem and I definitely wanted a bustle. The seamstress helped me into the dress and I put on my shoes. When I stood up, my friend commented that the dress was the perfect length. With my shoes on, it skimmed the ground, so no hem was needed. I think the seamstress was as surprised as I was!

After 10 months of waiting for this fitting, it turned out that all I needed was a bustle. Want to know the best part about this? If you’ll remember my 5th post about finding my holy grail wedding dress, the cost of the bustle had been included in my purchase price. This means that the alterations will cost me nothing, which makes me (and my budget) very happy!

*SmartBride Tip*
: Trust your gut! No one knows your body better than you. If you haven’t gained or lost weight since you purchased your dress and your clothes are fitting the same, you can probably get away with going for a fitting slightly earlier than if your weight was fluctuating. If it can be avoided, try not to leave the dress fitting stress to a few weeks before your wedding.

About our Guest Blogger: Alicia Mason
On December 23, 2008 I got engaged to my best friend and soul mate. We set the date for September 25, 2010 and for the past year I have been sleeping and breathing everything wedding including; the venue, food, flowers, decorator, invitations, and finding the perfect dress…all on a budget!

While I didn't go crazy meeting with 10 florists and 10 decorators, I put a lot of thought into each decision and was able to find great deals along the way. I am thrilled that the SmartBride Boutique ladies have asked me to be a guest blogger in order to give you details about my wedding planning. While the planning isn't easy, it is exciting and I hope as you plan your wedding, you'll find my experiences helpful.
