Bride-to-Be: Choosing A Wedding Date

TAGS: WEDDING PLANNING, WEDDING DATE, WEDDING EXPERTS, BRIDE TO BE

As a kid, my countdown to Christmas always relied on an advent calendar. I guess you can call me a chocoholic, but I can’t think of a better way to start the day!

On December 23, 2008 my advent calendar had a little more than chocolate inside. Before heading out of town to spend the holidays with family, my now fiancé proposed to me by replacing a chocolate in the advent calendar with a ring. Needless to say, I was ecstatic!

After saying yes (obviously) the only other question I had was...What happened to that chocolate?

We had recently moved to Toronto to better our careers and I was working at an unpaid internship while my fiancé worked a retail job. Because of this, we didn’t immediately set a date.

We knew that weddings were extremely expensive and it would not have been feasible for us to have a wedding that coming year. How were we going to decide on a date?

After the holiday season, when things had settled down, we decided that it was time to discuss possible dates. I couldn’t wait to start planning and may have been a little pushy when it came down to choosing a date!

While I had always pictured myself having a summer wedding, I was worried about unpredictable weather. I worried that it would be too hot, or it would rain – and you know how engaged couples obsess about weather for their big day! Because of these issues, we both thought that late September would work best for us both financially and in terms of weather.

September weather is usually comfortable and this gave us almost 2 years to save. In early 2009, we set our wedding date for September 25, 2010. This gave us plenty of time and made planning a wedding in a different city much less stressful (even though I had started planning right away). We still find ourselves explaining to everyone our reasons for having such a long engagement!

*SmartBride Planning Tip:* Be prepared to compromise on the length of your engagement of the time of year for your wedding, especially if you are paying for a lot of it yourself. Take the time and have fun planning without being stressed about money!

About our Guest Blogger: Alicia Mason
On December 23, 2008 I got engaged to my best friend and soul mate. We set the date for September 25, 2010 and for the past year I have been sleeping and breathing everything wedding including; the venue, food, flowers, decorator, invitations, and finding the perfect dress…all on a budget!

While I didn’t go crazy meeting with 10 florists and 10 decorators, I put a lot of thought into each decision and was able to find great deals along the way. I am thrilled that the SmartBride Boutique ladies have asked me to be a guest blogger in order to give you details about my wedding planning. While the planning isn’t easy, it is exciting and I hope as you plan your wedding, you’ll find my experiences helpful.
